Taking the IG Public

Social media is the true definition of a love/hate relationship. You love it for all the funny dog videos, but not so much for the unnecessary rude comments on your post.

Personally, Instagram is my favorite. Not for the filters, but for the simplicity of short 60 second videos and the seamless scrolling. Since, 2012 my account has always been private. However, for a few months now I have thought about taking it public. If you saw my IG story, because we are oh so lucky to be friends, you know why private isn't cutting it anymore. I post A LOT about the team I work for advertising our new brand and upcoming events. I also post about the events happening in my city that I am trying to help grow a better name for itself.

The problem was all this effort was being pushed towards my small 227 followers, most of which are not even in this state! Now this may be the Marketing 148 class I took 3 years ago speaking, but that's not targeting towards the correct market I'm looking to share all this exciting information with.

Now I have my fears about going public. It's not what inappropriate posts I may share that worries me, because I have common sense. It's not knowing what people may comment and the unwanted "DM sliding" that makes me eye roll so hard, I think my eyeballs are going to fall out of my sockets. Also, there's the possible online stalking, which unfortunately has happened before. However, I have decided to put aside those fears and give it a shot!

MY INSTAGRAM IS PUBLIC!

Because I am such an analyst, I am testing my public IG for 1 month. With baseball season starting soon, I have a lot of content to share. But before I went public I asked my friends to send me their thoughts on private vs. public. For the most part, pretty positive things to say about public accounts.

One thing I did get asked a lot, was why not make a separate professional account? Besides being tooooo lazy to manage two accounts, I like knowing that people can see me as just another human being with a life outside of work. I want them to know about my hobbies, music taste, and my love for craft beer, because that's how people can relate with me and build a relationship which in my hopes can benefit my professional life.

I'm only 12 hours and nothing too insane has happened, so that's comforting. If your curious about making your own account public, but want to know what possibly may happen stay tune. In a month, I'll share what I learn about putting myself out there in the cyber social world.

Until then feel free to check back to my blog soon. I have a few topics coming up that you may find entertaining, like "The Power of F**k It" and "You're a Savage, Not a Ho" that I'm really excited to share. Don't worry, I'll also have some G rated posts as well, if those are a little too PG-13 for you.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the Public vs Private account!
